Abstract:

Since 2007 Europeans’ attitudes about the European Union have constantly worsened. Image, confidence, optimism about the Union’s future – these three indicators in the Eurobarometer have plummeted sharply. As we explain this downturn we immediately turn to the financial and economic crisis. But a national analysis illustrates that the key factors in attitudes to Europe are not just economic. Increasingly Europeans are being tempted by a type of national withdrawal and this phenomenon is clearly linked to a weakening in support to the European Union. In a bid to restore support, more now than ever before, the European Union must act and show that it is supporting the citizens of Europe.

“World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it.” (Robert Schuman)

Today, 9 May 2013, Europe is celebrating the 63rd anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. In May 1950, the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman made the first move towards the creation of what we now know as the European Union (EU). Only five years after the Second World War, he proposed the creation of a supranational European institution. The countries which he called upon had almost destroyed each other, and reconciliation was a brave thing to imagine at that time. This year’s celebrations will be especially poignant following the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize 2012 to the EU. In its citation, the Nobel Committee said that the EU had “for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe”.

Happy Europe Day 2013!

In an increasingly integrated global economy, assessing the propagation of shocks is becoming of major interest to the international economic cycles analysis. It is indeed challenging to evaluate the impact of certain types of shocks on global business cycles and to disentangle the various transmission channels, such as trade flows, financial linkages or confidence effects. This conference will focus on empirical and theoretical contributions providing an assessment of various spillover effects at a global level and new perspectives on structural analysis, forecasting and economic policy design and assessment.

Topics include:

The evaluation of changing trade and financial linkages across countries

The macroeconomic effects of swings in commodity prices

The cyclical relationships between emerging and advanced countries

The integration of financial spillovers in global macro and econometric models

Theoretical and empirical analyses of the transmission of monetary and fiscal policy across countries

The event is hosted by the Banque de France, and sponsored by the EABCN in collaboration with the Banque de France Chair at the Paris School of Economics and the Pierre Werner Chair Programme of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute.

If you would like to attend the conference, please complete the General Registration Form and return it via email to 1404-Spillovers-ut@banque-france.fr no later than Monday 13 May 2013.

Organized by

Ansgar H. Belke, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Germany

Martin T. Bohl, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany

Pierre L. Siklos, Wilfrid Laurier University

and Viessmann European Research Centre, Waterloo, Canada

Oliver von Ledebur, Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut, Braunschweig, Germany

26 June 2014

Besides the crises of the last decade the world faced another economic challenge: the global rise in commodity prices. While high energy prices might have weakened the recovery process of countries affected by the global financial crisis and lowered global growth rates, high agricultural prices have pushed millions of people into poverty. Some argue that fundamental shifts have caused commodity prices to spike. Others hypothesize that the increasing process of financialization and speculation in commodity markets has pushed prices and volatility upwards. This workshop tries to shed some light on the causes and consequences of the commodity price boom. In addition, it seeks regulatory and economic advices for politicians and regulatory authorities. Topics to be considered for the workshop include but are not limited to:

historical developments and characteristics of commodity markets;

impact of commodity prices on economic growth, international trade and poverty;

process of financialisation in commodity markets and its impact on prices and volatility;

importance of fundamentals and speculative bubbles on commodity prices;

role of speculators and commodity index traders;

functioning and regulation of commodity futures markets.

We especially welcome empirical papers, but we will also consider theoretical work. One session will be devoted to presentations by PhD students. Academics and policy makers are encouraged to submit papers.

LOCATION: The workshop will take place on 26 June 2014 in Münster, Germany.

EXPENSES: Expenses for travel (economy class round-trip) and accommodation will be partially covered for speakers.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION: Only complete research papers (PDF versions only) should be sent by 1 November 2013 to: Joscha Beckmann, Email: joscha.beckmann@uni-due.de.

NOTIFICATION: Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 1 December 2013. Authors should confirm their participation by 15 January 2014.

PUBLICATION: After the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to submit their papers to KREDIT und KAPITAL, a journal that will publish a peer-reviewed special issue of the workshop submissions (http://www.kredit-und-kapital.de/). Editors of the special issue are Ansgar H. Belke and Oliver von Ledebur.

Conference Focus

This conference will explore the forms and functions of the constructed environment during a time of dramatic and at times disruptive change. The conference is a cross-disciplinary forum which brings together researchers, teachers and practitioners to discuss the past character and future shape of the built environment. The resulting conversations weave between the theoretical and the empirical, research and application, market pragmatics and social idealism.

We are inviting proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, or colloquia (See Proposal Types). Proposal ideas that extend beyond these thematic areas will also be considered. For more information about the ideas and themes underlying this community, see Our Focus.

Virtual participation is available for those who are unable to attend the conference in person. Proposals for virtual presentations may be submitted at any time, up to the start of the conference. All conference registrants (in-person and virtual) may also submit their written papers for publication in the refereed International Journal of the Constructed Environment.
