The 62nd Annual Meeting of the French Economic Association (Association Française de Science Economique, AFSE) will be held in Aix-en-Provence, June 24-26, 2013. It will immediately be followed, at the same location, by the 12th Journées Louis-André Gérard-Varet, Conference in Public Economics, June 26-28, 2013.

The two meetings will be hosted by the Aix-Marseille School of Economics. Each has its own organization and rules (in  particular concerning the paper selection process), though they will share the Wednesday June 26th in common with two plenary speakers:

  • Jean-Charles Rochet, Zurich University and Toulouse School of Economics
  • Hal Varian, University of Berkeley

Registration to the two conferences is encouraged through a discount policy.

Several awards will be announced during the Meeting:

  • Best doctoral thesis of the year in economics
  • Best doctoral thesis of the year in monetary and financial economics (Fondation Banque de France)
  • Edmond Malinvaud Award of the year for the best article published by a French economist under 40.

Anyone wishing to present a paper at the 62nd Annual Meeting of AFSE is invited to submit no later than March 15, 2013. Original full-length papers can be submitted in English or French, though presentations will be in English. Submissions are to be made starting on January 7, 2013, exclusively through the web interface at Decisions on acceptance or rejection will be notified to authors by April 8, 2013. Presenters may present no more than one paper at the AFSE Meeting. Any additional submissions beyond the first will be discarded. A co-author may present another paper co-authored by the presenter but must submit the paper separately.

Registration can be postponed until after decisions on acceptance or rejection are notified, but paper presenters must register for the Meeting no later than May 7, 2013. Failure to do so implies discarding the paper from the conference schedule. The conference program will consequently be finalized only after that date.

The conference program chair is Alain Trannoy, Aix-Marseille School of Economics (AMSE).

The vice chair is François Bourguignon, Paris School of Economics (PSE).

We welcome papers in any subfield of economics and papers influenced by the methodologies of other sciences.


The twelfth edition of the Journées Louis-André Gérard-Varet, Conference in Public Economics

Launched in 2002, this yearly conference aims at encouraging production and diffusion of high quality research in public economics, with a special emphasis toward results that clearly contribute to shed light on various aspects of  “real world ” public decision making. In this sense, this conference is in the spirit of the project of developing the Institut d’Economie Publique (IDEP) to which Louis-André Gérard -Varet devoted the last years of his life. The Journées Louis-André Gérard-Varet are open to all fields of public economics, both applied and theoretical. Are especially (but not exclusively) requested papers in the following categories of topics:

  • Taxation (including transfers, social security, etc.)
  • Local Public Economics and Geographical Economics
  • Fiscal Federalism
  • Provision of Public Goods
  • Externalities
  • Political Economy
  • Auctions and Public Markets
  • Regulation of Firms
  • Law and Economics
  • Environment
  • Health Economics
  • Education
  • Normative Foundation of Public Intervention and Social
  • Choice
  • Economic Inequalities
  • Macroeconomic Policy and Growth

The program will as usual consist in both contributed papers and three keynote lectures. The three keynote lectures will be given this year by:

  • Prof. Abhijit Banerjee, MIT,
  • Prof. Guido Tabellini, Universita’ L. Bocconi,
  • Prof. Hal Varian, University of Berkeley.

The contributed papers will be selected out of the submissions received. These submissions, which should at least take the form of a four pages abstract or, much preferably, of a version of the complete paper, must be received no later than March 15, 2013 by the scientific committee. A decision will be communicated to submitters no later than April 8, 2013. May 7, 2013 Registration deadline for presenters.
